Community Support Services is honored to announce the naming of the Alphonso W. Turner Homeless Outreach Center in memory of Mr. Turner who died in 2008. Mr. Turner was a consumer of services who was an inspiration to everyone who knew him. Al, by his own admission, spent much of his adult life as a troubled, chemically dependent, severely mentally ill, homeless individual, but it was his road to recovery that defined his life to those whose lives he touched. It would be impossible to define the scope of those whose lives were impacted and whose futures were positively changed by crossing paths with Al. Al began working as a peer support worker in the Homeless Outreach Program in 2000. Al was a key component of the work of the Homeless Outreach Program through his shared experiences and unique ability to engage those individuals experiencing homelessness and untreated mental illness. Al did not consider any task beneath his dignity in reaching out to someone in need. Al leaves behind him a shining example of one of his own daily philosophies: Strive for Greatness. The staff at Community Support Services is grateful for having had the opportunity to know and work with Al. He will be missed, but his memory lives on with the dedication of the Alphonso W. Turner Homeless Outreach Center.
